Branch and Price for Chance Constrained Bin Packing

چکیده
This article considers two versions of the stochastic bin packing problem with chance constraints. In the first version, we formulate the problem as a two-stage stochastic integer program that considers item-tobin allocation decisions in the context of chance constraints on total item size within the bins. Next, we describe a distributionally robust formulation of the problem that assumes the item sizes are ambiguous. We present a branch-and-price approach based on a column generation reformulation that is tailored to these two model formulations. We further enhance this approach using antisymmetry branching and subproblem reformulations of the stochastic integer programming model based on conditional value at risk (CVaR) and probabilistic covers. For the distributionally robust formulation we derive a closed form expression for the chance constraints; furthermore, we show that under mild assumptions the robust model can be reformulated as a mixed integer program with significantly fewer integer variables compared to the stochastic integer program. We implement a series of numerical experiments based on real data in the context of an application to surgery scheduling in hospitals to demonstrate the performance of the methods for practical applications.

Distributionally Robust Chance-Constrained Bin Packing
Chance-constrained bin packing problem allocates a set of items into bins and, for each bin, bounds the probability that the total weight of packed items exceeds the bin’s capacity. Different from the stochastic programming approaches relying on full distributional information of the random item weights, we assume that only the information of the mean and covariance matrix is available. متن کاملAmbiguous Chance-Constrained Bin Packing under Mean-Covariance Information
The bin packing structure arises in a wide range of service operational applications, where a set of items are assigned to multiple bins with fixed capacities. With random item weights, a chanceconstrained bin packing problem bounds, for each bin, the probability that the total weight of packed items exceeds the bin’s capacity. Different from the stochastic programming approaches relying on ful...
متن کاملBranch-and-price algorithms for the dual bin packing and maximum cardinality bin packing problem
There appear to be two versions of the Dual Bin Packing problem in the literature. In addition, one of the versions has a counterpart in the cutting stock literature, known as the Skiving Stock Problem. This paper outlines branch-andprice algorithms for both. We introduce combinatorial upper bounds and well-performing heuristics from the literature in the branch-and-price framework. Extensive c...
متن کاملBranch-and-price and beam search algorithms for the Variable Cost and Size Bin Packing Problem with optional items
In the Variable Cost and Size Bin Packing Problem with optional items, a set of items characterized by volume and profit and a set of bins of different types characterized by volume and cost are given. The goal consists in selecting those items and bins which optimize an objective function which combines the cost of the used bins and the profit of the selected items. We propose two methods to t...
متن کاملOptimal production strategy of bimetallic deposits under technical and economic uncertainties using stochastic chance-constrained programming
In order to catch up with reality, all the macro-decisions related to long-term mining production planning must be made simultaneously and under uncertain conditions of determinant parameters. By taking advantage of the chance-constrained programming, this paper presents a stochastic model to create an optimal strategy for producing bimetallic deposit open-pit mines under certain and uncertain ...
